Fastest ODI 100 While Chasing - Kevin O'Brien

[1] Shahid Afridi (45 Balls)

India vs Pakistan, Kanpur (15/04/2005) : Afridi is at the top of the table in scoring fastest odi 100 while chasing. While batting first, India scored 249/6 & set a total of 250 in front of Pakistan. Then Shahid Afridi came as an opener with Salman Butt. After first 2 overs Afridi scored 1 run off 4 balls.

Then Balaji came to bowl the 3rd over & Boom Boom Afridi started to exhibit his hitting skills. 23 runs came from the over including 2 4s & 2 6s from Afridi. He completed his 100 in 45 deliveries. But after completing in the very next ball he was dismissed by Harbhajan Singh. He also made 131 runs opening partnership with Salman Butt. Pakistan won the match by 5 wickets with 47 balls still remaining in the match.

England vs Ireland, Bengaluru (2/03/2011) : Chasing the huge total of 328, Ireland was struggling 106/4 in 22.2 overs. Then O’Brien came into the field. At that moment Ireland had to chase 222 runs from 158 deliveries which was looking impossible at the time. But Kevin made the impossible possible by scoring fastest 100 in the history of world cup (overall) in just 50 balls. Though he was dismissed at the score of 317 in 48.1 overs but from there Ireland managed to score 12 more runs in 6 balls & defeated England. This is also the highest score by a team while chasing in the world cup.

[3] Virat Kohli (52 Balls)

India vs Australia, Jaipur, 16/10/2013 : India were chasing a humongous total of 360 runs. When Kohli came to the crease India was 176-1 at 26.1 overs thanks to Shikhar Dhawan & Rohit Sharma. Then Kohli scored the fastest hundred as an Indian in the ODIs & India also won the match by 9 wickets with 39 balls still remaining. This is the only instances when a team have chased a target of 350+ with loss of 1 wicket.

[4] Jonny Bairstow (54 Balls)

England vs Scotland, Edinburgh, 10/06/2018 : While batting first Scotland scored 371/5 – Scotland’s only 350+ score in ODI, thanks to Calum MacLeod’s quick fire 140 off 94 deliveries. Chasing the total of 372, Roy & Bairstow were the openers for England. Bairstow scored 100 of 54 balls but it wasn’t enough to take his team over the line.

England vs West Indies, St George’s, 27/02/2019 : It wouldn’t be possible that we are talking about fastest centuries & Chris Gayle wouldn’t make the list. Gayle is 5th in the list by scoring 100 in 55 balls in chasing cause. Chasing 419 runs Gayle played an outstanding innings of 162 runs at a strike rate of 167 but his effort went to vain as Windies lost the match by 29 runs.

[6.A] James Faulkner (57 Balls)

India vs Australia, Bengaluru, 2/11/2013 : Yes! Bengaluru again made the list, not shocking though. It was the same match where Rohit Sharma scored his first double hundred in ODI. Chasing 384 Australia was 132 for 5 while Faulkner came into the crease. Things went to bad to worse when they lost their 8 wicket at the score of 211. Then Faulkner made 115 runs partnership with Clint McKay which is 4th highest 9th wicket partnership in ODI. But they lost their last 2 wickets in 2 successive deliveries at 326 & lost the match by 57 runs.

[6.B] Thisara Perera (57 Balls)

New Zealand vs Sri Lanka, Mount Manganui, 4/01/2019 : Chasing 320 in front of New Zealand Sri Lanka was 121/5 when Perera came to the field & then scored joint 6th fastest ODI 100 while chasing. But as previous 3 mentioned 100s this 100 also went in vain.

[7] Jonny Bairstow (58 Balls)

England vs New Zealand, Christchurch, 10/03/2018 : Bairstow scored a 100 off 58 balls while chasing a modest total 224 against New Zealand at Christchurch & helped his team to win the match in 32.4 overs with 7 wickets in hand.

J Bairstow : 104(60) | 4s – 9 | 6s – 6 | S.R. – 173.33

[8.A] Virat Kohli (61 Balls)

India v Australia, Nagpur, 30/10/2013 : After scoring 52 balls 100 in the 2nd match of 2013 Australia tour of India series, Virat Kohli again scored a quick fire 100 in the 6th match of the ongoing series. While chasing 351, Kohli scored a 100 off 61 balls & again took team India over the line.

V. Kohli : 115(66) | 4s – 18 | 6s – 1 | S.R. – 174.24

[8.B] Jos Buttler (61 Balls)

England v Sri Lanka, Lord’s, 31/05/2014 : Chasing 301 England were in deep trouble as they lost their 5 wicket at the score of 111. Then, Buttler came at the crease & started to exhibit his hitting skills & scored fastest ODI hundred at the home of cricket, Lord’s.

[9] Mohammad Azharuddin (62 Balls)

India v New Zealand, Baroda, 17/12/1998 : This is the only hundred in the list which came before 200s. India were chasing 279 runs at Vadodara. When Azhar came India was not in the good situation. They were 118/4 – then the skipper leading from the front by scoring then fastest ODI 100 & 4th overall fastest ODI 100 as an Indian. He stayed at the crease till the end & India won the match by 2 wickets.

Fastest ODI 100 While Chasing - Virat Kohli

[10.A] Kedar Jadhav (65 Balls)

India vs England, Pune, 15/01/2017 : Another Indian! Another 350+ target! But this is time not Kohli it is Kedar Jadhav. While playing, in his home ground India were struggling 63/4 then he made a 200 runs partnership with skipper Virat Kohli & took India over the line. In the mean time he also completed his 100 in just 65 balls.

[10.B] Jason Roy (65 Balls)

England vs West Indies, Bridgetown, 20/02/2019 : Jason Roy scored 123 off 85 deliveries while chasing 361 against England at Bridgetown in the last year. His & Root’s 102(97) helped England to chase down the huge total.
