Not many athletes have been able to successfully make the switch from one sport to another, but one individual did just that after leaving the game of cricket he became the only cricketer to compete professionally as a mixed martial artist and also as a boxer, today I have the immense pleasure to speak with former England & Surrey captain, The fighting Captain Adam Hollioke.
Hi, Adam tell us a little about yourself?
I was born in Melbourne, Australia. my Mom’s half Asian and half Australian my dad’s Australian, we moved to the UK when I was 12 years old.
How did you get into cricket?
I played lots of sports as a youngster, played AFL, then played rugby and took up cricket when we moved to the UK, and basically, cricket stuck with me, I also took up boxing from the age of 12.
You are the only cricketer in history to have also competed in MMA and Boxing how did you jump into combat sports?
I started boxing at the age of 12, and I used to train boxing during my cricket days too because I loved the sport and it was a good way to stay lean and fit during the off-season. I began MMA after retiring from cricket and I competed in it professionally and in boxing as well. I’ve got a few PRO fights, I mainly fought at heavyweight or cruiserweight.
You and your late brother made Ben made your test debut together and I believe you were the first pair of brothers in the 20th century to do so, how was that feeling?
It was an amazing feeling making that debut with my brother, having the whole family fly out to see us make the debut together was just surreal.
What is your fondest memory of playing cricket?
Well, that would have to be winning the 1999 County championship with Surrey, it was a beautiful feeling winning with the lads you’ve grown up with and become close friends with.
If given a chance which player past or present would you love to play alongside?
Well from the Past it would have to be Sir Gary Sobers and Viv Richards and from the present it would be Virat Kohli.
An interesting fact about you is that you have a lifetime supply of Mars Candy Bars, are you big on chocolates given your fit lifestyle?
Well, not too sure if that is still valid since I don’t have much of a sweet tooth so I don’t each too many chocolates.
How do you define success?
As long as you are happy doing what you are doing that is success,at the end of the day everyone wants to be happy.
You are a warrior both on the inside and the outside, you have been through so much but you always find a way to come back on top, what is it that has always kept you going?
Without a doubt it has to be my girlfriend, she has been there for me like my rock, always looked out for me and always made me happy.
Thank you for such a candid chat mate, wishing you all the best in whatever you do.
